What is an AI orchestrator?

An orchestrator is the component that runs an agentic workflow. It holds the goal, decides which agent or tool acts next, passes context between steps, manages memory, retries failures, and stops the run to ask a person when a step needs approval or something goes wrong.

Example

In an invoice workflow, the orchestrator sends the document to extraction, then matching, then pauses for approval when the totals do not agree.

In one line

The component that holds the goal, sequences the agents and tools, manages memory and handles errors across a run.
